Based on the findings of G+D’s product carbon footprint calculations, this presentation will highlight ways in which today’s cotton-based banknotes can produce fewer carbon emissions in their production and circulation through an appropriate selection of certified fibres, less plastic use, and the use of recycled materials. This includes the foil-based security features of banknotes. Different ways of repurposing shredded banknotes at the end of life are also outlined and a brief insight into the Green Banknote Initiative is provided.
